Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.

Vehicles, walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.

Officers state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.

The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they added.

Police then found numerous other marked vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Police state initial examinations show the substance was likely human blood.

"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.

City officials said they were working "to solve the incident" and have asked to the community for information.

A high-ranking political figure stated the attack rendered him without words and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the death of nine people by a shooter targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
